About “A Reason to Live”
![]()
Hello, this is Sanghoon Han.
Over the past nine years, I’ve written more than 800 essays on Brunch, and during that time, many readers have asked me to publish a collection of my writings.
Until now, I’ve always declined the idea of publishing an essay book. While I’ve been fortunate to receive kind words from readers who enjoy my stories, I never considered myself a “socially successful” person. I thought that if a publisher released my book, it wouldn’t be commercially beneficial for them. In other words, it wouldn’t be marketable.
But then I came across an interview with Seino, the author of Seino’s Teachings. He had shared the wisdom he gained from life, freely and openly on the internet for anyone to access. Before that, I had only seen the cover of his book in bookstores and dismissed it as yet another self-help book written by a successful businessman.
Of course, Seino is indeed a highly successful person. But watching his interview made me reflect: What is it that I want to gain from writing an essay? Could it be that I’ve been writing all along with the same intention as Seino—to simply share what I’ve learned in life?
Yes, that was it. After writing hundreds of pieces, I’ve realized that I wasn’t chasing money or trying to make a living off my writing. I simply wanted to capture fleeting moments, wrap them carefully in words, and offer them to others who might need them. I’ve published two books so far, and both were written with the intent to share stories, not to generate income.
The upcoming essay, A Reason to Live, is the most deeply personal question I’ve ever explored. It is a reflection of the question I’ve wrestled with more than any other throughout my life. And like Seino, I plan to make the entire book available for free as a downloadable PDF online. I want to include not only the writings I’ve already shared but also many that I’ve kept private—until now.
For me, a reason to live has always been the most important question—because without it, I wouldn’t have been able to continue. And I believe there are many in Korea who, like me, have clung to that one question, carrying their aching hearts through each day.
Sometimes, when we witness the traces of another person’s life, we find courage. Sometimes, we mourn together. And in this fleeting world, we try to capture a sliver of happiness, however brief. Even if life doesn’t go as planned, even if we face countless setbacks—if we have even one reason to live, we might just make it through this difficult journey and smile at the beautiful moment at its end.
This essay is for the younger version of myself who endured painful days, and for you—who may still be numbing your pain with emotional anesthetics.
P.S. The full PDF will be available for free download via Google Drive on July 1st.

See all posts
